Due to my laziness at sending my February prayer letter out in time I’ve decided to combine both February and March news and prayer requests together. Apologies!
These last couple of months have brought with them many highs and many lows.
One of the disappointments this month has been the fact that I still
do not have a house in which I can settle into. Following much prayer
and advice from others I have decided to move out of Benson’s house
whilst he continues to find a house for us both. I’ll be living with a
man called Bob. Bob is the son of Henry Orombi, the Archbishop of
Uganda, and currently lives in an accommodation block next to the ‘The
Palace’ (Archbishop’s house). I’ve only been living there for one
week, and so far it’s been great. This might be a temporary
arrangement although it could turn out to be a permanent arrangement
for the remainder of my time here in Kampala. In my short time living
in the Palace compound, I’ve already enjoyed a much higher standard of
living than I did at Benson’s house. I’m able to eat with those who
live in the Palace as well as gaining access to the wireless internet
in the house. God is good!
Praise God for blessing me with
such great accommodation! Please continue to pray that the Lord would
make known to me where He wants me to live. If that is to be with
Benson, please pray that he would be able to find a suitable place for
us soon. Continue to pray that the Lord would keep teaching me to
depend on Him and not to be anxious.
People at UCF are still
continuing to help me settle into Ugandan culture. A great honour for
me this month was being given a Ugandan name by Grace, Pastor Micah’s
wife. I am now known at UCF as Dembe, which means peace/peaceful.
I’ve also been ‘adopted’ by a family that lives near church. They have
given me the surname of Mubiru. I am now the third born of six
children in that family!
In other news, my meeting with the
National Youth Basketball Club (NYBC) resulted in an invitation to join
them in Mbarara (W.Uganda) where they played friendlies against several
local schools and the main university team there. It was also an
opportunity to visit the Family Planning Association of Uganda (FPAU)
whom they have close ties with. This was a great opportunity for Ben
(from the sports ministry team) and me to meet and start forming
relationships with the men & women’s basketball team that we are
ministering to/through. There were a group of twenty five that
travelled and only five of those were known to be believers. We have
since held another basketball tournament at UCF. This was a lot more
productive and organised and was a big improvement on what I
experienced in Mbarara.
Please pray for myself, Ben and the other
girls from UCF who are in the ladies team. We are really working hard
to form relationships in which we are able to show them Christ. Pray
that throughout whatever trials we face that we would stand firm to
God’s word and would obey His will and not ours.
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.James 4:8 & 10 (ESV)
Yours in Him,
Dembe Mubiru (aka Steve Paterson)
