Allison Gillespie talks about what she learnt while at dwelling places (work amongst street children). There are many different opportunities to work with children and young people in Africa. These have included, getting involved in church youth work, Bible clubs, sports, music and drama outreach. Our short termer's have ministered to street children, children affected by HIV/AIDS and young offenders. Below are just a few stories of what our short-termers have done in the past. If you are passionate to see children and young people hearing the gospel and growing in their faith then please feel free to contact us to find out how you could get involved.
Rachel Curry, Mahajanga, MadagascarRachel Curry was teaching and working with children in Mahajanga, Madagascar I've been helping at a kids club in a little fishing village on Sunday afternoons. There is about 25 kids and they all just gather on the tiniest straw mat and we read a bible story, sing a little, do a memory verse and play games! They're soooooooooooooooo cute i love being around them so much. Well, please pray as the people who usually run it are not here this weekend so i've been asked to lead. With my malagasy this could be interesting, but a challenge! They speak NO french, most are not schooled at all, but hand gestures go a long way, and i’m taking Vanessa along to help me teach them games !
John Dunlop, Cape Town, South AfricaJohn Dunlop was involved with sports ministry and outreach among young offenders with City Mission, Cape Town, South Africa I am involved with the youth, Sunday school and sports outreach programme in the churches local community. This sports out reach has really taken off in the last month. It only began in the last 6 weeks but we consistently have 40+ boys per night. The Church has a lot of gym equipment and is packed each night. we open up the church from 4-7pm. there is also a football team and break dancing classes for the under 14s. On Saturday, we held a father and son breakfast for the kids that have been attending. Unfortunately no fathers came but around 40 kids (aged 12-20) turned up. Three guys gave their testimonies including an ex gangster. Many showed interest and we are now hoping to run a Christainity Explored course for them.
Work amongst street children or children affected by HIV/AIDSThere is a large number of children in Africa that are affected by the rampages of HIV/AIDS and poverty. Aim International is involved in reaching out to these children through caring for physical needs, teaching, organising games and activities, and telling them of the hope that only Jesus brings. |
